Episode 10: Pete Enns
Today’s conversation is a gift my friends! I hope it is a gift for you…but I KNOW it was a gift for me!
Dr. Peter Enns is a Scholar, Theologian, Writer, and Speaker with a profound ability to articulate deep perspective on faith and theology in a common language that makes sense to our lived experiences of what God is like and how Scripture can be practically understood.
Pete’s latest book (he’s already published nearly 20) called ‘The Sin of Certainty…Why God Desires Our Trust More Than Our “Correct” Beliefs’ is the primary subject of our conversation today.
This latest work of Pete’s flows very near the heartbeat of Fearless Questions and my belief that God is not only unafraid of our big questions of faith, but that engaging the mystery of our faith takes us to the very maturity God invites us towards.
Let me share just a couple of lines from Pete to give you a flavor of our conversation:
“The problem is trusting our beliefs rather than trusting God.”
(Let that quote simmer with you for a little while…and then see what you think of it.)
“Church is often the most risky place to be spiritually honest.”
(This one always makes me sad for how true an experience it is for so many people.)
“Our thinking and analyzing is important, but at some point we have to embrace mystery…(or said another way)…”To bow before the reality of the limits of our analytical abilities. (because if we are talking about God…our reasoning has to come up short at some point.”
This stuff is so good today my friends!
I’m guessing for some people this might sound off the reservation…but for many others it will be aloe to their soul.
Regardless…I hope you will listen in and see what questions emerge in your own hearts while you listen.
Enjoy!
